Good times were had, Barbells for Boobs

The Benchmark BBQ was a good time for everyone!  We had a tremendous turnout for the random WOD, and a good portion of participants hung out after for some food and good times!  The WOD that was chosen the Inaugural Benchmark BBQ was Nancy!  5 rounds for time of 400m run and 15 overhead squats.  Afterwards many people were discussing their dislike of Nancy and overhead squats!  Everyone did a fantastic job, though!  Thanks for making the event a success!  I'm looking forward to the next one for sure!

What qualifies as a good CrossFitter?
3 - 2 - 1 GO!  Less than a few minutes later the workout is over.  Someone is doubled over on the floor, hoping to keep lunch down even though it was consumed hours ago.  Sweat drips off of them in buckets and cheers surround them as they slowly climb to their feet.  A fire-breather has just put on a tremendous display of athleticism and fitness!!
Is this the definition of a great CrossFitter, or is there more to it?  Does it take more than just significant prowess of the 10 Physical Skills of Fitness?  Is there a non-physical aspect to this game, something deeper than strength and metabolic conditioning?
There must be a set of characteristics or traits inherent to any athlete that would delineate them from good to great.  These attributes, these qualities are never really looked at.  They tend to fall to the side as performance takes the main-stage.
What are these characteristics?  How might someone identify a great CrossFitter?  POST THOUGHTS TO COMMENTS, PLEASE!

We just got our shipment of Lacrosse balls yesterday, and the foam rollers should be here today.  With that on the table, everyone should be excited about getting to the gym a little early to roll out the pain spots!  If you're unsure about how to go about this (really?), feel free to ask us for a couple of ideas.  You can also expect a list of pre-WOD rolling and post-WOD stretches to help improve mobility and performance in the near future.

Benchmark BBQ explained

So we've heard a lot of positivity about the Benchmark BBQ, but some confusion as well!  Let's try to clear some things up, shall we?
Every 4 weeks, at the end of Elements, we will be holding a barbeque or some other type of paleo-party (it will be getting colder soon).  The Elements class will come in for their final Elements workout at 3pm that day!  Afterward they will be invited to hang around for their congratulatory BBQ!  It is our way of saying thanks to them and welcoming them to CrossFit Las Vegas!
Current CFLV members will also be intvited in at 3pm for a random benchmark, to be chosen just before class!  All other class times will be canceled for that day.  After the benchmark, all will be invited to hang around for the festivities and meet the new CrossFitters!

Benchmark Barbeque!

It was said a few months ago that we should have barbeques more often!  With that in mind we're gonna give something a shot!  Every 4 weeks we will be holding the Benchmark Barbeque!  This will always fall on a Saturday and the class will be at 3pm!  This will be the only class time offered that day!
We will choose the Benchmark at random before class from a "wheel of doom/hat of hell" kinda set up.  After the workout has been chosen, class will continue on as it normally would.  Once the class is over and everyone has recovered, WE EAT!!!
Just like we did at the Anniversary Barbeque, meat is on us, side dishes are on you!  Bring your favorite paleo-friendly side dishes and a "never say die" attitude!  This should be one good time!

Yep!  We will be offering three yoga classes in the month of October beginning on Saturday, October 16th at 12pm.  The other two classes will be at the same time on October 23rd and 30th!  The intstructor for these classes will be a face that is familiar to some of you who may have seen that interesting fellow practicing gymnastic movements on his straps, Tristan Jih.
These classes will be taught as a three-part series and will follow this format:
Part 1:  Sun Salutations
An introduction to three different sun salutations, geared to warming up the body and increasing flexibility.
 
Part 2: Post-Workout Stretches
A selection of postures perfect for increasing flexibility, muscle endurance, and body awareness.
 
Part 3:  Tristan Class
A "standard" Vinyasa flow class as taught by Tristan.

Love boobs? Well here’s your chance to save a pair! On October 23rd, we will be hosting our 1st annual Barbells for Boobs Amazing “Grace” fundraiser.  The purpose of the event is to raise money for qualified women who need screening and/or diagnostic procedures in the prevention of breast cancer. By supporting Barbells for Boobs, we’re helping low-income and uninsured women get the examinations they need in order to stay cancer free!  Click here to learn more.  Breast cancer affects us all, and this is our way as a community to make a difference. Please register for our event at www.barbellsforboobs.org.  All levels of fitness are welcome!

Here are the steps for easy registration:

1. Go to the “Sign Up” drop down in the top menu and click “Participant Registration”.
2. Click on the Amazing Grace event link.
3. Click on “Individual Registration”.
4. On the registration page, make sure you fill in the “Organization” box to specify that you are from CrossFit Las Vegas so we get credit for your participation.

How Can I Get Better At Pull Ups?!
1.  It might seem obvious but practicing your pull ups is far and away one of the best ways to improve your numbers.  How to practice might be a little less obvious.  One way is to come in before the wod a little ealier and get on the pull up bars to do a few extra sets.  This can also be done post-workout!  Nothing too taxing, just few sets of a few reps will pay off big over time!
Another way to practice is to practice through out the day!  Try finding something to hang from where ever you might be every few hours and grab a few reps.  You can learn more this "greasing the groove" tactic here.
2.  If the kip is the part of the movement giving you trouble the same rules apply from above but with the basic kip swing.  Find a place to hang from during your day and/or come by the gym early and/or hang out after and practice maintaining the rhythm in the kip swing.
3.  If the pull up itself is the elusive part there are several avenues of attack the first of which would be of huge help.
A.  Negatives - Once again coming in early or hanging around after, jump your chin over the bar and lower yourself under control to full elbow extension.  This can also be done with band around your feet.
B.  Dead Hang Pull Ups w/ a Band - Still holding with the early/after premise, climb into a band and bang out a few sets of pull ups on your band of choice.
C.  Body Rows -  While not truly a vertical pull as is seen in the pull up, body rows do offer a strong amount strength development for the pull up.  As before, early and/or after.

how is it october already?

Foam Roller Clinic
Dr. Josh Satterlee, of Bio-Mechanics of Las Vegas, will be at CrossFit 702 on October 2nd at 9AM to do a Foam Rolling Workshop!! We continue to stress the importance of stretching (pre and post-workout) and recovery to lower the risk of injury during workouts, and to reach full potential as an athlete. So, this class would be a great way to learn how to effectively use a foam roller, lacrosse ball, lactic acid roller etc...
The cost is $50 with a foam roller or $25 without (if you already have one or don't care to purchase one).  A sign-up sheet will out at the front desk for all those interested in heading up for the clinic.
This will not be a 90min lecture on how to roll.  There will be movements tested both before and after the rolling/stretching!  Bring some water, a tolerance for discomfort, and a willingness to perform better!
There are still tons of spots available and this clinic should not be missed!!  If you are looking to recover faster or perform better, the information provided will be invaluable!!

Balance, coordination, flexibility and accuracy are all elements of fitness improved via neuromuscular adaptation.  Yoga addresses all of these.  Body awareness, or the ability to make your body do what you want when you want, is crucial in moving better.  What is CrossFit ultimately about?  Moving better so you can increase your physical work capacity.  Yoga can undoubtedly help a lot of people move better which can get you CrossFitting better.
